I remember two years ago signing the Change.org petition created by Jennifer Risinger for MAC Cosmetics to create an Aaliyah inspired collection. The singer’s go hard fan based frequently pushed for the beauty brand to recognize the singer and organized collectively with dedicated social media sites, hashtags, and the petition that garnered 26,218 supporters!
On social media, MAC Cosmetics recognized her fans’ efforts, writing, “Aaliyah is truly one in a million-an unstoppable icon whose groundbreaking work in R&B music and film inspires us all. Today we join her countless fans in celebrating her with the announcement of the MAC Aaliyah collection. You made it happen!”
MAC made the announcement yesterday, the before the anniversary (August 25, 2001) of her death at the age of 22 in a plane crash in the Bahamas after filming the music video for the single “Rock the Boat.”
In part the collaboration is meaningful for her fan base because it puts some shine on the star, whose ability to speak through her music is limited because most of it is unavailable for public consumption. According to an in depth article by Complex, most of the rights to her music are controlled by her uncle Barry Hankerson, who inexplicably refuses to allow her music to be streamed or sampled.
As of now, there are no details on what will be in the Aaliyah capsule though MAC did say it will launch in summer 2018.
