Fly Read: Don’t Settle For Good Enough

23 May

image

How long will you go about your life without identifying your purpose? If you believe that life is nothing more than a social experiment then coast on, but don’t continue to take others on your purposeless journey. And sir, a wife is referred to as a “helpmeet.” You don’t need help if you aren’t doing anything. Life is more than just waking up, going to a job, hanging out on occasion, and going home to sleep and eat. You’ve been given a commission to fulfill, and it’s one that cannot be ignored. Don’t fear the adventure and passion that goes along with pursing a goal that goes beyond you and your lifetime. Clearly identify your part to play in this commission we’ve been given, and firmly commit to it! End the games, and exit the maze of mediocrity you’ve come to know.- Written by Cornelius Lindsey

I’m raising money for a great missionary trip and I would love your support! Check out my The Fly Girl Goes Global campaign, www.gofundeme.com/flycarla .

Fly Read: Like Beyonce, I’m a GROWN WOMAN

21 May
Beyonce just released her “Grown Woman” song and as I’m listening to the song I think of all the grown woman decisions I am currently making. I’ve made a decision to leave a city that I love to create the life I wish to live. I’ve decided to pack up everything, station myself in Baltimore and use the next seven months to travel and write. This is void of others expectations, void of what some of my friends think I should be doing, and void of what my parent’s believe I should be doing. To me being a grown woman is having an independent thought, an independent thought is a thought that a woman makes without the influence of others, the media and pop culture.

A grown woman knows that not everyone is rooting for her, a grown woman knows that some of the people close to her will doubt her and while there will be MORE obstacles stepping out of her comfort zone, it will be well worth it. A grown woman knows there is nothing cute about playing it safe or playing small for the sake of others, she knows that there is nothing fulfilling about not seeking to be fulfilled. A grown woman knows that if it is in God’s will and she is abiding in Him, that the possibilities are endless.

Some women are walking around grown in age but still mentally and spiritually little girls. As for me, I’m getting my grown woman on.

The Fly Girl Guide to Fashion’s Night Out

7 Sep

My #FNO Outfit: Jeffrey Campbell Shoes, Millau shorts and sweater

Don’t you love that moment when you forgo all your original plans and your night ends up better than expected? That magical moment happened yesterday when instead of heading to Soho to experience #FNO, the girls and I decided to give Meatpacking a whirl.

We were dressed to the nines and carefully navigated the cobblestone streets of MPD, our first stop was the Sandro x Refinery 29 event. Refinery 29’s Global Editor Connie Wang handpicked her personal faves from Sandro’s fall line. Sandro’s fall line features tuxedo shirts, tailored pants, leather skirts and tweed, all perfect stable pieces for the fall.

After Sandro, we headed to Christian Louboutin to sneak a peak at his new fall collection, which features sparkles and spikes. We sipped on a sparkling rosé while making friends with the sale associates to secure our invites for the CL sample sale in November. After meeting the manager and munching on a peach and goat cheese crostone and mini-cupcakes, we headed to Theory.

Spiked Loubies

Theory was one big party! I headed straight for the bar (don’t judge me I’m not a lush, I was simply celebrating #FNO!) where there was this huge crowd of party-goers waiting for a cocktail. The thing about being 4’11’’ is that I can maneuver through any crowd, so while everyone bum-rushed the bar from the front, I slid through the side of the bar to grab my drink and one for the homie.

The mission of the night was to spend 45 minutes at each spot, so just as we were about to leave Theory, in walks Anna Wintour! It was massive chaos for like seven minutes, she came in, walked about 10 feet, chatted with someone and then walked out. Again, with me being vertically challenged, I was able to dip and dodge through the crowd and snap a picture of Anna.

After coming down from the high of seeing the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, we made our way to DVF. DVF was a mad house! Who knew so many people wanted to see Beyonce’s sister? I skipped the line and headed to the back of DVF to see if Solange’s DJing skills really lived up to the hype. Her set was short and she played classic Hip-Hop: 112, Total, Brownstone, Q-Tip and then some down south bounce music. While I was getting my paparazzi on, someone touches my back, I turn to look and it was Rocsi of 106 and Park. I chatted with her briefly (mainly plugging The Fly Girl Guide) as she was politely moving me out the way to speak to Solange; the two shared a moment and then Rocsi made her way out.

After DVF, the girls and I were pooped and slightly buzzed. With aching feet and rumbling tummies we headed to Pastis for food, a recap of the night and girl talk.
