Fly Culture: Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations

23 May

Schiaparelli and Parda The Met
Schiaparelli and Parda The Met

My Met.  My Style.
Clothes don’t make a woman but they can add a certain something.  Clothes can add femininity as they hug our curves and thankfully,  they can mask insecurities with the right fit. They can add texture to our already fabulous selves. Schiaparelli and Prada’s designs prove that women do not have to be limited to a certain look. We can be soft, girly, strong, and any variation of chic. We can be all of  that.

5 Things To Do Before Monday

19 May

The weather is gorgeous and the weekend is in full swing. If you’re still looking for something to get in to, here are five things you must do before Monday.

1.  Stop by the Betsey Johnson Liquidation Sample Sale- The mood on the 6th floor of the Millennium Broadway Hotel is somber as the sight of discounted frilly cocktail dresses is a little depressing, yet the  hotel maid staff is having a field day at this liquidation sale. The thing about Betsey Johnson is her stuff is cute but if you’re not going to prom, when are you wearing a hot pink tulle dress?  Go for the half off jewelry, shoes and winter accessories.

2.  If you’re Soho chilling, off the corner of Spring and Broadway you’ll find the Loeffler Randall sample sale.  The stock is plentiful and the staff is helpful. Sandals go for $85, while clogs go for $125.  The leopard print pumps are $225. They are the most comfortable shoes I’ve tried on in a while. When and Where: The Loeffler Randall showroom at 525 Broadway (corner of Spring in SoHo), 4th floor. Saturday, May 19th, 10:00AM-5:00PM

3.  The Gant sample has an additionally 20% off all sample sale prices. When and Where: Saturday, May 19., 10am—5pm. 260 Fifth Ave between 28th and 29th Sts. Link: GANT

4. Think fall at the Theory Women’s sample sale as leather and outerwear are  priced at $249 (from $815). When: Saturday and Sunday, 10am—5pm. Theory Women’s -261 W 36th St.

5. Before Monday, score some discounted Cheap Monday denim at The News sale. The News sale includes markdowns on Cheap Monday, Clu, Sacai, R13, Co, White Mountaineering, Folk, Tim Coppens, Rhie, Anniel shoes, and Creative Growth for Everybody. When and Where: Saturday, May 19. 10am—6pm. 495 Broadway between Broome and Spring Street, 5th floor

Fly Fashion: Scoring Christian Louboutins = Priceless

16 May

Christian Louboutin Sample Sale

Waking up at 4:00AM after getting two hours of sleep: $10 for Mary Kay concealer to hide dark circles.

Taking the train to the city from Brooklyn at 5:00AM: $2.25.

Engulfing Starbucks coffee and a multi-grain bagel to manage my hunger while waiting in line: $4.00.

Meeting June Ambrose, befriending beauty blogger, Jacqueline of 2 Snaps & A Twist, while shopping along side Amanda Lepore who told me, “if you don’t love it, don’t get it,” then scoring the Christian Louboutin Super Dombasle Cork Platform Sandals= Priceless.

To others-waking up before dawn to be the first in line at the Christian Louboutin sample sale  is silly. For fly girls- scoring another pair of Loubies at a discount is priceless.

“Shorty working so hard, she deserves those Louboutins.”

Fly Fashion: Let Them Eat Manolos

4 May

Manolo Blahnik Sample Sale

Yesterday, I attended the Manolo Blahnik sample sale and although I scored a great pair of heels, the sale left a bad taste in my mouth. It might have been because I was all sampled sale out (I covered the Be&D sale and the Monica Botkier sale this week) or because upon waiting for the sale to start, I was grouped with the Maire Antioniettes of sample sales. I didn’t get the VIP press invite so I knew I had to get there early to be apart of the first group when they opened the sale to the public. So yes, I traveled from BK to get to the Upper East Side by 6:00am. I was exhausted and it was too early to hear the annoying chatter about the  hierarchy of sample sales.

A certain group of ladies were sucking the fun right out of the sale by one, being annoyingly self-righteous and two, acting as if they held stock in Manolos. One VIP took it upon herself to start making a list of those who arrived to the sale, this is before the Manolo staff even set up their efficient system. When shoppers arrived she would tell them to sign the list, she even stated that everyone should sit in the order that they arrived.

Another shopper who had to move because she wasn’t sitting in the correct order and I shared a glance that suggested, who died and made her the chief of order at a sample sale? The same VIP finds herself a friend and they went on to engage in probably one of the snootiest conversations I have ever overheard. Self- righteous number one and self -righteous number two, just went on and on about their disappointment in the sale leaking to the public and how they hate when other fashionistas try to swindle their way into sample sales, all typical sample sale behavior.

They were speaking as if non-press or non-VIPs weren’t worthy of attending the sale.  Here I am, not a press  or VIP listening and thinking to myself is this how the women of the press and editors of fashion publications really think?  That the same women they are writing for aren’t even allowed to partake in a sale?  It’s bad enough that some designers don’t like certain people wearing their clothing, but here, we have women who are seemingly “setting the trends” for the masses expressing their disdain about the “masses” being allowed at various sample sales. F.Y.I. It’s always been the masses that have set the trends, i.e. the Youthquake movement where teenagers dominated the fashion and music scene.

These women were acting as if they were entitled to this sale.  Ladies: you’re getting discounted past season shoes that come in plastic tubs -get over yourself.  We’re all here at the crack of dawn to shuffle through shoes; you are no better than me.

And honestly, stylish Manolos can never substitute a shitty attitude.

Be&D Sample SaleBe&D Sample Sale

In my head, I was just hoping to spot a pair of Be&D Brightlight Big City sneakers at the sale. I was praying to the fashion gods, that if I got there early enough there would be at least a sample pair in my size. To my dismay, there were no sneakers in sight but the sale had so many other goodies that I quickly got over my hissy fit; it was nothing more than a mere #flygirlproblem.

The Be&D showroom was plentiful;tons of merchandise. The first rooms holds shoes, belts and small leather goods such as wallets, studded headbands and iPad cases.

The stock shoe selection was great- ranging from camo booties, studded flats, leopard sandals and studded mules. Shoe samples were $25 and they had numerous sizes. Stock shoes prices varied. I saw a couple priced at $50 and others at $150.

The bag selection is like a studded, exotic skin heaven!   Bags start at $125. The Pippa Crossbody in various colors is priced at $125 (originally $248) and the Jordan Drawstring price varies on the bag’s skin.

The sale continues until Friday, May 4th.
