Fly Event: Girl Model- Being a cover girl isn’t all it’s cracked up to be

19 Mar

Girl Model NYC

Last month at Fashion Week, designer Marc Jacobs caused a stir by using two 14-year-old models in his show, ignoring the new guidelines set by the Council of Fashion Designers for America that state a model should be at least 16 to walk the runway.

Doesn’t sound like a crime? However, in a new documentary filmmakers David Redmon and Ashley Sabin make a strong case for better protections for young models in their new doc Girl Model.

Ashley, a former model turned scout, travels to remote Siberian villages searching for teenage girls to model in Japan. There she discovers a beautiful 13-year-old named Nadya (who is told by casting agents to lie and say she’s 15).

Seeing modeling as the only way to support her family, Nadya signs a contract full of red flags (for instance, if she adds even one centimeter to her waist, the contract will be broken).

Girl Model explores the gritty realities of the modeling industry.

The screening is followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.
